Hodgdon Hall is a dorm at Tufts University. It is located near the campus center and Dewick dining hall. At maximum capacity, Hodgdon can house 150 students. It is a co-ed dorm, but it is single sex by floor. The first and second floors are all male and the third and fourth floors are all female. All floors are split into 2 halls, except the first, which is just one hall. Each hall has 1 large, single-sex bathroom. Each bathroom has 3 toilettes, 3 sinks, and 3 showers. There are no lounges on the halls. The dorm houses mainly freshmen and some sophomores, but is open to anyone. It is staffed by 4 RA's.
Hodgdon offers doubles and singles. There are 55 doubles available. These doubles are, on average, approximately 14'X14.5'. The singles, of which there are 40, are approximately 8;X14.5'. There is also one 2-person apartment located on the first floor that has a bedroom, living room, kitchen, and bathroom. All of the dorm rooms have linoleum floors with cinderblock walls that have been pained white. All of the furniture- desk, dresser, bed- is movable in the rooms in Hodgdon. Students may wish to avoid the ground floor, as it is a smaller floor and it partially below ground. Students may also wish to avoid the corner doubles (124, 224, 324), as they are very cramped due to an awkwardly-placed ventilation shaft. This shows up as a blacked out space on the floor plan. Hodgdon has a large lounge on the first floor that also has a large patio built off of it. There are 2 kitchens in Hodgdon. One is on the second floor and one is on the third floor. There is a laundry room on the ground floor and a very small laundry room on the third floor. Also, the Hodgdon good-to-go eatery is on the ground floor.
Hodgdon is inhabited primarily by freshmen and sophomores with mediocre lottery numbers. Tufts sadly does not post the numbers needed to get a room in hodgdon. Approximately, an average between roommates of 2200 is enough to secure a double. A higher number, probably in the range of 2700, is necessary to get one of the forty singles. These numbers obviously fluctuate from year to year.
In sum, freshmen who live in Hodgdon generally reflect back on it fondly. Tight communities form between the smaller, single-sex hallways. With relatively few RA's, it is easier to host small dorm gatherings without getting into any trouble. Also, students like having the good-to-go located in their basement with the dining hall just steps away. Sophomores, on the other hand, may enjoy the same locational benefits, but often feel isolated from the rest of their class, as they are surrounded mostly by freshmen.
