The George is the work of pub architects Bird & Walters. Although unknown today, they had one of the longest surviving practices of the time and built seventy four pubs.

  • 'When Dylan Thomas was doing a lot of writing for BBC Radio, he was frequently in the George. One afternoon as he was drinking with a gang of BBC people, a regular burst through the door. He told the group that a man whose wife Thomas had been 'escorting' behind his back, was approaching the pub. 'He's coming to get you,' panted the informant. With that, Dylan lifted the hatch and scuttled under the bar as the cuckold roared into the pub. "Where's that bastard Thomas?!" roared the cuckold as Dylan cowered beneath the pumps. The grey regulars began clucking around the distraught man, offering sympathy and alcohol as he poured out his heart about his wife's affair with the legendary poet. Eventually he calmed down and got onto another subject. As he did so, an arm emerged from under the bar, found the pint that it was clutching only minutes previously, and carefully took it back down. And if it isn't a true story, then it should be.' (Butterfly Brain by Barry Cryer - Weidenfeld & Nicholson 2009 )
