When Istana Balai Besar was constructed 150 years ago, it was refered to as New Castle or Kota Bharu. Since then, this town was named KOTA BHARU. The original 12 feet high perimeter wall was constructed of Kayu Chenggai.

  • The Istana (palace) was built in 1845 by Sultan Muhammad II. The word 'Balai Besar' means grand hall. The two major halls are 'Dewan Singgahsana' and 'Dewan Penghadapan'. The official Royal ceremonies are held in this Istana.
