The mosque was established by the Malay Muslims who moved to Katanning in the 1970's from the Cocos (Keeling) Islands to be engaged in the "halal" slaughter of animals in a local abattoir.
The mosque was officially opened on May 24, 1981 by Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, the first Prime Minister of Malaysia, who was then the President of the Regional Islamic Da'wah Council of South East Asia and the Pacific (RISEAP).
