At one point, Totem Lodge was a summer camp on the shores of Burden Lake. Built in the Catskill style, the old resort was popular among the Jewish population in New York City. The resort was borne of Matthew Larkin's summer home, known as Camp Totem. It was later revived with the new name of Totem Lodge. The hotel played host to many well-known names in show-business and politics, including Richard Nixon. The resort closed in the mid-1950s, and functioned as Berkshire Mountain Camp until it was shut down due to health code violations in 1956.
