jazz club, closed
Throughout most of the 1950s the Blue Bird Inn was the premier place to hear jazz in Detroit. Wardell Gray, Tate Houston, Billy Mitchell, and Elvin Jones all played in the house band at one time or another. Miles Davis, Tommy Flanagan, Ahmad Jamal, and Sonny Stitt were among those who could be heard here.
Staying true to its jazz roots proved to be the Blue Bird's undoing, as musical tastes changed. The inn closed in the 70s and the building has been vacant since.
