Originally constructed by Shedd-Bartush, once the largest manufacturer of private label oleomargarine in the U.S. Its customers included Jewel Foods, A&P, Piggly Wiggly, Kroger, Safeway and many other chains. Headquartered in Detroit, where it had two plants, Shedd-Bartush also had factories in Elgin, Illinois, Greenville, North Carolina, Dallas, Cincinnati, Louisville and Omaha. It also produced peanut butter, salad dressings and pickles.

In 1959, Shedd-Bartush was acquired by Beatrice Foods of Chicago. Following the 1984 merger of Beatrice and Esmark, the company was sold to Unilever.
