There is a global demand for a systematic institution to increase advanced education and research in order to actively respond to changes in scientitic and technological environment and requirements, to produce manpower in advanced science and technology, as well as to improve the research and development capabilities in advanced science and technology. Based on two reports of feasibility study for an advanced research and education institution-one in May, 1989 and the other in February, 1991, the Establishment Committee of Gwangju Institute of Science & Technology (GIST)was organized in October, 1991 and the Establishment of a Taskforce in March, 1993. THe Special Act for the Special Foundation of Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology was enacted and promulgated as a National Assembly resolution on August 5, 1993 and its enforcement ordinance on Octover 6. DR. Doo Bong HA was inaugurated as the first President on October 11, 1993 and the establishment of the Institute followed with its historical groundbreaking within the Gwangju Science and Technology Park.
