Originally separated from McMillan Island by Brae Slough (previously unnamed) to the north.
The Jacob Haldi Bridge crosses Bedford Channel, a small arm of the mighty Fraser River, connecting Brae Island (and McMillan Island) to Fort Langley.
River sediment deposition (and deposits from dredging operations) after the construction of the bridge and causeway have effectively joined Brae Island and McMillan Island.
Brae Island Regional Park is named for the island.
