"Between the Hedges" and Home of the Dawgs!

Completed 1929. Named after Steadman V. Sanford, longtime proponent of athletics at UGA.
For the period 1892 – 1910 football games were played at Herty Field on North Campus, behind the Chapel and New College. From 1911 – 1928 football and baseball games alike were played at a field bordered with wooden grandstands just west of this site, near the current Tate Student Center. Playing field surrounded by hedges of English Privet, giving rise to the oft-heard phrase of playing “between the hedges.”

Site chosen because of its location in a deep ravine, forming a natural bowl which eased construction. North and south lower grandstands completed in 1929. Inaugural game October 12, 1929 in which UGA defeated Yale 15-0. Upper tiers of seats completed in 1967. East endzone enclosed 1981. West endzone partially enclosed 1991. Second upper tier added to north stands in 2004. Current capacity 92,746, 5th largest nationwide & 2nd largest in the Southeastern Conference.

Also site of Women’s Soccer finals of 1996 Olympics in which the US team defeated China 2-1 for the gold medal.
