By 1936 the original Temple Baptist Church, located across the street, could no longer accommodate the church membership. In 1937, a new, 5,000 seat auditorium was opened and the old church was converted to educational and recreational purposes. After the property was purchased by King Solomon Baptist Church in 1952, the building played an important role in local and national affairs. It was here that Berry Gordy first came to hear the all-girl trio who were to become famous later as the Supremes. Noted civil rights speakers Thurgood Marshall, Martin Luther King and Malcolm X appeared before large audiences.
The church closed as membership dwindled. In 2011, the City of Detroit awarded the property with an historical designation.
