Pier 43 and its Ferry Arch (headhouse), a decorated hoisting tower for loading and unloading rail cars on and off ferries, was built in 1914 to serve the Belt Railroad. Box cars of goods would begin their rail trip there by first crossing the Bay on ferry. It also is where prisoners bound for Alcatraz were put on ferry.
