chapel, place with historical importance, NRHP - National Register of Historic Places, Gothic revival (architecture), 1830s construction
Historic Gothic Revival-style chapel dating to 1835. John Hartwell Cocke built this chapel as a place of worship for the slaves that worked on Bremo, his plantation (located just west of here, on the west side of Route 15). The chapel was moved to its current location in the late 19th century, having originally been located on the plantation itself. It currently serves as the parish hall for the adjacent Grace Episcopal Church, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places for its distinction as the only existing slave chapel in Virginia.
