The Chain Battery was constructed just above the point where the Great Chain was anchored to the West Point shore about 27' above the waters of Hudson River. The battery was a 65' long stone parapet that mounted three 12-pounder cannons. (See fortwiki.com/Fortress_West_Point_Batteries ) The Great Chain and Chain Battery were part of the West Point defenses that prevented British naval vessels from sailing up the Hudson river.
