Michigan Stadium, located in Ann Arbor, Michigan, is the home field of the University of Michigan Wolverines football team. It is the largest American football stadium in the United States, with an official capacity of 109,901 (total attendance has typically exceeded 100,000 per game since 1975). Nicknamed "The Big House", it was constructed from September 1926 to September 1927 at a cost of $950,000. Originally having a capacity of 72,000, its capacity has been extended numerous times. It was expanded to 85,752 in 1928, 97,239 in 1949, 101,000 in 1955, 102,501 in 1992, and 107,501 in 1998. The stadium's field was covered in natural grass from 1927-1968 and from 1991-2002, TartanTurf from 1969-1990, and Field Turf since 2003.
Among other events hosted at Michigan Stadium are "The Big Chill at the Big House" (an ice hockey game between Michigan and Michigan State that was held in December 2010) and the 2013 NHL Winter Classic.
