Chatrapati Sambhaji wrote several poems including a highly prestigious Sanskrit poem book “Budh bhushan”. He even composed poems in Hindi language.
Sambhaji was a very brave, courageous and powerful Man. His personality, attitude, intelligence and qualities had gained him the respect and appreciation of everyone who visited the Maratha Durbar.Sambhaji and Kavi Kulesh were arrested at Sangameshwar in konkan & later moved to Bahadurgad near Bhima riverFirst Kavi Kulesh & later on March 11, 1689, Sambhaji was killed by Aurangzeb (Mughal Empire), reportedly by tearing him apart from the front and back with 'Wagh Nakhe (Tiger claws, a kind of weapon), and was beheaded with an axe. This grievous death was given to him at Vadhu on the banks of Bhima river, near Pune.In a great historian Vasudeo Sitaram Bendrey’s research on Sambhāji maharajah he was able to clear the very popular notion that Sambhāji maharajah was a unfit person that indulged in Alcohol and other vices. The research into to Sambhāji maharajah was started in 1918. This was his lifelong passion; he went through a lot of documents and historical artifacts to piece together the true story of Sambhāji maharajah. When he was in England he went to India house as well as the British Museum and collected a vast trove of documents and artifacts relating to Maratha history which he brought back to India. The trip to England provided VS Bendrey an opportunity to read and digest thousands of documents relating to the history of the Maratha. It also gave him a unique insight into the thinking and politics of the founding fathers of the Maharashtrian people. On the basis of these documents VS Bendrey was able to further the work of writing the true history of Sambhāji life. It turned out that Sambhāji was a noble, brave, literary figure. finally concluded his 40 years of research by publishing a biography of Sambhāji maharajah in 1960. For years it was believed that Sambhāji death and Samadhi was located in Tulapur but V.S. Bendery’s research led him to prove that the true location of Sambhāji Samadhi was in Vaduz-Badruk (Koregaon). He went to the location of Sambhāji Samadhi and discovered that it was in a state where nature had overrun it. He and his fellow historians cleaned the place to find the “Vrindavan” of Sambhāji. Today in the month of March during the new moon (Sambhāji death day) a big celebration is held in Vaduz to commemorate the life of Sambhāji maharajah.
