Vanderbilt Mausoleum (New York City, New York)

USA / New York / Bloomfield / New York City, New York
 mausoleum, interesting place

One of the largest tombs in the United States, designed by Richard M. Hunt. Despite the vast fortune of the Vanderbilts, the ornate family tomb has been allowed to fall from splendor. The domed skylights which used to have stained glass are now boarded over and the area has been heavily vandalized by trespassers. The ground were once designed by Olmsted. Burials include Cornelius Vanderbilt, William Henry Vanderbilt, Cornelius Vanderbilt II, George W. Vanderbilt, Fredrick W. Vanderbilt, Cornelius Vanderbilt III, and Grace Vanderbilt.

Based upon photos taken during construction, there is a central aisle with an altar at the end. There are two groups of six burial niches on each side of the structure. A.G. Vanderbilt III created the Vanderbilt Cemetery Association as an advocacy group for the site.
