The Buddhist Shankh monastery (khiid) was founded in 1647 without a fixed location, until established at this site in 1787. By 1875 it contained 23 shrines, and in 1921 housed 1500 monks. It was allowed to fall into ruin during the Communist period, and is currently being restored.
