Paola Bianca was the daughter of Paola Orsini and Pandolfo Malatesta II ; who married Pandolfo III , died young in 1398, as is clear from reading tombstone epitaph language latina.Si monument is the most articulate of the whole funeral as it incorporates the stone sarcophagus of Verona finely crafted , leaning on a multiple high pedestal ; two twisted columns with composite capitals to the sides ; and a sculptural crucifix above comprising a central set on a rock with skull , extremely expressive and decidedly anti-classical nell'enfatizzazione of facial features and disfigured anatomy suitable to express the suffering of Christ.
The complex is complete with figures of saints where you recognize from the left of the cross , the Virgin with her hands crossed on the abdomen, St. Louis with his miter on his head and the Angel of the Annunciation . To the right of the cross , recognize Saint John the Baptist with his hands clasped on his chest and his long locks of hair serpentine , St. Francis with the simple habit , and finally the Virgin of the Annunciation at the right end that communicates with the Angel of the Annunciation aforesaid, to ' extreme left of the sculptural group . All figures are based on leaf- shelves -worked decoration . The theory of figures is crowned by a cornice poly-lobed arches pointed , sort of sculptural transposition of the fourteenth-century painting altarpieces . On the front of the sarcophagus , within five circles that many notches inscribed quatrefoil , stand out figures of saints made of white Carrara marble recognizable from left, St. Catherine of Alexandria , St. Anthony Abbot, St. John the Baptist , a Franciscan saint and Santa with a cross and book (maybe Santa Chiara ) . On the sides of the sarcophagus , within the same cavity on the right shows a Holy Martyr ; left the bed because it lacks the figure lost in the Second World War.
Raining on the cover facing the viewer fashioned in the shape of the roof, above a bed covered with fabric that forms handled folds, lies the figure of the deceased. The face of a missing part of the nose, portrays the woman peacefully asleep in idealized expression , far from providing a sense of death. The work, dated 1413 -14 , is attributed to Philip Domenico , sculptor active in Bologna and Venice , a pupil of the brothers Jacobello and Pierpaolo From Masegne , and represents the whole, given the delicacy of the drapery , the elegance of busts and the proportions of the architectural elements , a first hint to the incipient Renaissance style.
