This is the east dike that was created to hold back water so that the Portage Pit could be created to mine the Portage orebody. The middle part of the portage orebody was underwater so in order to mine the whole orebody dikes were required on the east and west sides of an arm of Portage Lake so that area could be drained in order to make the pit continuous between the north and south extents of the orebody.
