Swamp (birding site)

This is a newly formed swamp. This has come up in the last three years perhaps. Due to the upper Krishna project, the nearby Ghataprabha river spills over into adjoining land to the west when in spate during late monsoons. It does not spill into the east as the bank is higher there. The subject area being a trough, retains the spillover water even after the river shrinks. It thus forms a swamp with enough water to last through the whole of summer.
Since last year, a large number of migratory birds are coming into this swamp. In about half an hour, I could spot painted storks, black headed ibes, Eurasian spoonbill, purple swamphen, white breasted waterhen, cormorants, sandpipers, heron, great egret, cattle egret and a few other birds. Unless the swamp is drained (and I hope not!) this promises to be a superb birding site in the coming years
