Built in 1974 by the Dayton-Hudson Corporation (now Target) it is the youngest of the four "dale" shopping centers circling the Twin Cities, originally developed by The Dayton Co. The others are Southdale Center in Edina, Rosedale Center in Roseville and the former Brookdale Center in Brooklyn Center.
It was originally anchored by Dayton's (which became Macy's), Donaldson's (which also became Macy's), JCPenney and Sears. One of the two Macy's (NE side) was demolished in 2013 to expand the mall and add a new Nordstrom.
