Village Community School (New York City, New York)

USA / New Jersey / Hoboken / New York City, New York / West 10th Street, 272

6-story school originally completed in 1886. Designed by David I. Stagg as a 5-story school building called Primary School No. 7. It was re-designated as Public School 107 in 1897. This school closed in 1930 and reopened as the parochial school of St. Veronica's Church in 1932. The school building remained vacant from 1963 until June 1970. It was then purchased and converted into the Village Community School, a private elementary school founded by Sheila Sadler.

A new building wing, and a new facade for the original building were designed by architect Leo Blackman, and completed in 2003. The new facade of the older building is clad in multi-colored patterned brick, with stone lintels, sills and banding. The parapet has brick with terra-cotta insets and a pressed metal cornice. The eastern wall is constructed of red brick and has windows and is visible over the playground.

The contemporary annex portion, which contains additional classrooms, a gym and an auditorium, is also constructed of multi-colored patterned brick. It contains five stories at the Tenth Street elevation and four stories at the Washington Street elevation with a one-story setback at the roof. The entranceway has a metal and glass canopy and is located in a four-story recessed bay at the Tenth Street facade.
