The M60 is an American second generation main battle tank (MBT).
Although developed from the M48 Patton, the M60 series was never officially classified as a member of the Patton tank family, but as a "product-improved descendant" of the Patton tank's design.

  • This is NOT an M-60 tank. It is an M4A1E8 Sherman. I've been there and seen it many times.
  • OK, I stand corrected. It seems that the M4 Sherman that once WAS here was removed in 2012 for refurbishment and now (as of Jan 2014) sits on a pad in front of the new Iowa Gold Star Museum building located just a little ways north of its old location, and that it may indeed have been replaced with an M60. Since it's been about 5 years since I was last at the museum and I already stuck my foot in my mouth on the earlier post about it NOT being an M60, I don't want to go out on a limb and say for sure that it now really IS an M60 after all, but it seems like it very well could be. My bad!
  • It's definitely an M60. Just was there the other day. I believe the other tank sitting there on the other side of that artillery is an M47 Patton.
