3-story tavern of frame construction, but has been veneered with composition material. Its history goes back to 1817, when the house belonged to Daniel D. Smith, a bookseller and stationer, who served as City Assessor and Election Inspector. The house has a bracketed cornice of much later date.The building housed a longshoreman's bar dating back to 1880. The White Horse Tavern became a literary hangout in the 1950s, frequented by names such as Dylan Thomas, Jack Kerouac, Anais Nin and Norman Mailer.

The interior retains its original tin ceiling and oak bar table that date back to its construction in the 1880's.
