This is the start point of the annual Pikes Peak International Hill Climb ("The Race to the Clouds") motor-sports event. From here, participants attempt to post the fastest possible time over the 12.42 miles of the Pikes Peak Highway to the summit. Currently, French rally car driver Sebastien Loeb holds the all-out record. In 2013 he posted an 8:13.878 run in a highly modified 875-horsepower Peugeot 208 T16 Pikes Peak racer.
2012 was the first year the event took place on the fully paved course, paving having been completed in August 2011.
