Hosn Suleiman - Baitokaike

Syria / Tartus / Duraykis /
 temple, archeological site

The "Castle of Salomon" is the ruins of the two temples of Baitokaike. It seems to be close to the Amrit Temple as a Holy Spring Temple (which still flows underneath the temple area). In terms of style it also reflects the influence of Palmyra, but definitely is elder and its beginning has to be dated to the Phenician times. The bigger temple (134 x 85 m) is built of huge blocks (10m / 2,60m / 2,50 m) and reaches to thoses of the Baalbek Temple. Each of the four sides has one gate. In the center, the cella was erected surrounded by columns. The 2nd temple (60 x 60 m) - on the other side of the road - was dedicated to Zeus.
A very impressive archeological site and worth a longer visit.
