Nawamis (Arabic for Mosqitos) still enigmatic remains from stone age: most probably graves erected by hunters or sheppards who also dug for minerals in the area around 4000 b.C., one of the eldest archeaological sites in Egypt. More than 30 round stone settings of 4 m in diameter an 2 m hight once covered with big stone slabs . The small entrance always is directing to the west. Following another theory, the buildings were erected by the local population in order to hide themselves from pharaonic Egyptians who conquered the Sinai peninsula.
Worth a visit. Access to the site from the road St Catherine - Nuweiba.
