The fourth member of the Santa Maria Class of Guided Missile Frigates presently in service with the Spanish Navy, the SPS Reina Sofia was laid down at the Ferrol Bazan Shipyard in October of 1987 and commissioned into the Armada Española in October of 1990.
Presently homeported at Naval Station Rota, the Reina Sofia operates as part of the 41st Frigate Squadron when not attached to the Fleet Flagship Juan Carlos I (L61).
