The Archaeological site Assur is located in the southern outskirts of the city. The site was Built by the Sumerians in the 3,000 bcs, making it one of the oldest sites in the region, showing the general area of Shirqat has been occupied for thousands of years. The city is dedicated to a god with the same name, Assur.
