The Church of St. John the Evangelist was established in 1883 going by the first baptismal record on 11 August 1883. This 'Mother' church of the Roman Catholics in Malaysia was the only Catholic church in the state of Selangor back in 1883. It was constructed with the help of a wealthy Chinese Catholic miner named Goh Ah Ngee who lived in Kajang, Selangor.

During World War II, Malaya fell to the hands of the Japanese Occupation. Although the cathedral was closed, the buildings were left intact and unharmed. After the Japanese Occupation, it returned to its original state with the help of the British Military Administration. The cathedral is among the oldest buildings in Kuala Lumpur. January 8th is the anniversary of its dedication.
