5-story soup kitchen/mission completed in about 1880 as a tenement. The current soup kitchen, the Catholic Worker St. Joseph House of Hospitality, was founded by Dorothy Day in 1933. The organization offered lodging for homeless men, as well as hot food, and published the paper Catholic Worker here.
Although Dorothy and the paper both moved in the 1970s, St. Joseph House remained and continues to feed people every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
