Initially opened on July 12, 1999 for Petronas staff, and status as a mosque before being administered by the Federal Territory Islamic Religious Council. The mosque was built by Ahmad Zaki Resources Bhd. www.azrb.com/ It is an architectural landmark of Islam in a rapidly developing area in the capital city, Kuala Lumpur. In 2009, the mosque went through a major renovation to increase the capacity from 6,000 people to 12,000 people.

Since ancient time, mosque always form centre in cities, or in neighbourhoods of cities. This function does not always have to be followed, but it can be connected to mentality, so that the establishment of a new mosque often facilitates the emergence of a city centre. This is true in this sense where this As-Syakirin mosque is constructed in the centre of Kuala Lumpur (KLCC).
