Fakultas Matematika dan Ilmu Pengetahuan Alam, Universitas Syiah Kuala berdiri pada tahun 1989 sebagai sebuah program studi dan menjadi fakultas definitif pada tahun 1994. Ada lima jurusan di FMIPA Unsyiah, yakni Matematika, Fisika, Kimia, Biologi dan Kelautan.

Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences
The faculty was officially opened on October 22nd, 1993. The preparation had been started by the appointment of Coordinator Committee for Mathematics and Natural Sciences. In developing its infrastructure, this faculty obtains funding support from several organizations like GTZ, HEDS-USAID, and OECF. Although the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences is still young, it has become one of the most important faculties in improving the quality of education at Syiah Kuala University. Basic Mathematics and Natural Science courses at all other related faculties are provided by the teaching staff from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. This Faculty also receives many competition grants such as from DUE-LIKE and TPSDP. Its graduates have been working in many kinds of national level profession such as university academic staff in North Sumatra and Java, policy makers, secondary education sectors, industrial sectors, environment conservation and other services. There are five fields of study at the faculty : Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology.
