  • Poivre Atoll (english meaning: pepper) is near the eastern edge of Amirante Bank. A settlement stands on the northeast side of the Poivre Island in the north, amid a clump of trees. This island is bisected by an airfield, about 1200 m long. There are three islets on the reef (with land area): Poivre (North), 1.1 km² Florentin, 0.024 km² ÎIe du Sud, 1.356 km² Poivre was named in 1771 by Chevalier de la Biollière after Pierre Poivre, the famous "Peter Pepper" and Intendant of Mauritius (then Île de France) and Reunion (then Bourbon) from 1769 to 1772.
  • The airfield's usable length is in maximum 900 m and the width should be rather 24 m. The mentioned size above is measured from coast to coast. Latest sat pictures are even showing a much shorter strip according to the visible markings.
