Addu Atoll

 city, atoll, draw only border

Addu Atoll is the southernmost atoll in the Maldive Islands, and with nearby Fuvahmulah, the only part of the Maldives in the southern hemisphere. It was also known as Seenu Atoll (an administrative designation named for the letter Seenu in the Dhivehi alphabet). The four main inhabited islands, Hulhudhoo, Maradhoo, Feydhoo, and Hithadhoo have since become Addu City. It has a population of some 18,000. The name Addu City refers to these islands.

Addu was developed in early WWII as a secret naval and air base by the Royal Navy. It is believed that it remained a secret until at least 1943, by which time the Japanese were in no position to do anything about the base. In 1957 the base became "RAF Gan"; the British withdrew in 1975.

On 3 January 1959 Addu (together with Fuvahmulah and Hivadhoo Atoll) withdrew from the Maldives as the United Suvadive Republic, but they capitulated, returning to the Maldives 23 September 1963.

As a city (and one of only two cities in the Maldives - the other being Malé), the main islands of Hithadhoo, Maradhoo, Feydhoo, and Gan are connected by a 14km causeway road. The other inhabited island is Meedhoo/Hulhudhoo.

Comments

  • This description is supposed to be about Addu Atoll, not about the Maldives in general. I have edited it for that reason.

  • addu atoll has the best places of the maldives
  • Addu city refers only to the 4 main inhabited islands, not to the atoll as a whole. This the correct title for this polygon is Addu Atoll, which includes the entire area.
