A panoramic aerial photogarphy indeed of my kindergarten till junior high 2 of the Regina Pacis School in Jakarta. Sprawling extensively from the mouth of Jalan Palmerah Utara 1 till the Regina Pacis Franciscan Missionaries of Mary Nunery at the background. Being a male student, I studied at the Regina Pacis Kindergarten School way back in 1959 when the school borrowed the premise at the annex building of St Theresia Church and parts of the present day St.Theresia School at Jalan Haji Agus Salim, before it moved to Jalan Budi Kemulian for a short period before the final relocation in 1963 of the Regina Pacis International School (widely known as English Section as English is the medium of instruction in the classes) and Regina Pacis National School (where Bahasa Indonesia is the medium of class instruction) to the present premise of Jalan Palmerah Utara 1, witnessing the ups and downs of male students intake from year to year and having seen my senior male students had to be rejected and transferred to other schools in Jakarta The 1966 saw a further devastating development within the Regina Pacis School having to say farewell to the English Section as the new regime government of Indonesia under the then Suharto's New Order discontinued the functioning of the International section of the Regina Pacis School in Jakarta. We had to say good bye to fellow students/friends bearing in mind that we were of the same school, studying same school subjects when Regina Pacis School were still of one unit (ie, no division of English Section or Bahasa Indonesia section), or when the school, under the directive of the Dept. of Education of the Indonesian government disallowed children of Indonesian citizens to study in the International/English section, leaving the school to function twice each day at the Budi Kemuliaan premise, when mornings were devoted to the International/English classes whilst the afternoon classes were conducted for the Bahasa Indonesia classes. Vividly I could recall meeting my ex-classmates from the English section at the same time a sudden change or Our Father's prayer reciting from that of English language to the Bahasa Indonesia. I was told that it was the School Board decision (under the umbrella of FMM - Fraciscan Missionaries of Mary world wide) of giving the first priority to female students. True indeed, having observed world wide schools under the FMM, may it be in Singapore (Hai Sin Catholic High), Malaysia (Sekolah Menengah Assunta), Philippines (Stella Maris Colleges), India (Stella Maris Schools/Colleges/St Clare Convent), Melbourne, Japan (Seibo College) all bearing the motto of AD VERITATEM PER CARITATEM, all of those schools, with the exception of Singapore's Hai Sin Catholic High School as a co-ed school, have only girls/females in their classrooms. Thus the Regina Pacis School of both in Jakarta and in Bogor are the exceptions of being co-ed schools too. Though I left the Regina Pacis School at Junior High 2 (SMP 2) for Singapore, United Kingdom and the United States of America, I am still proud of once being a male student of the Regina Pacis School, Jakarta. Those were the years (2nd pioneer year or 48 years ago) when each and every academic ending years were always followed by the anxiousness of us, male students, on the outcome of the decision making for the Sisters of FMM in deciding of whether to carry on/continue accepting male students or terminating them. A very unique, challenging, intriguing, ambiguous and yet interesting school years at the Regina Pacis School. A memoir that can never be forgotten, at least for me as an individual. I have since then left Jakarta, the country and adopt a foreign natiionality/citizenship. Best Regards AD VERITATEM PER CARITATEM E.N.O. accepted

I attended Regina Pacis from 1962 to 1965. As an American, I'm confused as to the exact location which I would have been attending at. I was only aged 9 to 12 at the time, so my memories are vague. Thank You, Brian Walsh

Hi Brian, Having read your query, please let me enlighten you and help you recall your memories of the Regina Pacis School. Looking at the years 1962 to 1965, the Regina Pacis you rememberred could still be located at the Jalan Budi Kemuliaan, a place adjacent to the Jakarta's National Museum or perpendicular to the Presidential Palace. Between 1965 to 1966, the RPS moved to the locatiion depicted on the areal photograph stated as TK-SMU Regina Pacis, a sprawling compound which was once occupied by the RPS Indonesian section building at the front entrance and the RPS English section at the rear. Does my explanation help you to recall or to clarify your doubts; or perhaps help you to crystalize your vague memories back?

Perhaps I need to make a certain clarificatioin on my previous note about the Regina Pacis School, Jakarta As a second batch, meaning joining the RPS as a kindergarten student in 1958 and Grade 1 in 1959, RPS was founded as a one united school, ie THE REGINA PACIS SCHOOL, with medium instructiion conducted in English language. My parents help me to recall my memories back. Roughly around mid 1961 (as the academic year at that time started from August to July of the following year), the RPS was seggregated into the Indonesian section and English section, being the Indonesian government decree disallowing children of the Indonesian citizens to be enrolled in the English language medium school, whilst maintaining the status quo of those children of non Indonesian citizen parents. Not long after that the RPS moved to the rather residential premise at the Jalan Budi Kemuliaan before the final and present location at 1, Jl. Palmerah Utara, Jakarta Barat (commonly known as Slipi). In 1967, instead of 1966 as I mentioned previously, the RPS English section was required to be closed, making JIS (Jakarta International School) the only English language international school in Jakarta or perhaps within the republic that that time. It's now a completely Indonesian school, enrolling students from all walks of life, starting from Kindergarten classes (2 years), Grade 1 to Grade 12/ or to the Indonesians those grades are commonly catagorized as TK, SD(6 years), SMP(3 years Junior High) and SMA(3 years Senior High).

Hi ungasg, Brian Having read the previous notes, indeed it brought back lots of pleasent memories of the Regina Pacis international school, Jakarta. Memoir that definitly can never be forgotten. I left the RPS to Egypt, back to my county leaving behaind my classmates. It is a pleasent feeling to find someone who attended the same school at the same years and share the memories. I do remember some of my classmates (both boys and girls), The Mother at morning prayer and at the beginning of the first class period and a lot more. Thanks for the information provided about the Regina pacis school specialy the development after 1965. shaha

Like Brian, I attended the English Section of Regina Pacis in Jakarta from 1961 to 1965. Two of my teachers were Miss Wahjuni and Mrs. Anak Agung. Among my classmates were Chu Mai Ling, Tony Cogevinas, Bernhard Weiler and Hans Rainer Knoblauch. My brother Peter and sister Pat also attended. There were many students from Chinese and Indian families in the city as well as some Americans and Europeans. Learning British money and Bahasa Indonesia were the biggest challenges. I remember my school days very fondly, and rembember attending at both locations.

Hi Gentlemen I went to RPS from 1958 to 1961 in English section. I left after completing class 3. I remember a friend (class mate) with the name of Shahid. His father was ambassador (Sultanuddin Ahmed) of Pakistan, to Indonesia. I do not remember any teachers. I do remember coming early to school to use the wet slides, sliding down while standing-up. I also remember a student from Argentina coming out tops in the exams; the rest is fuzzy. There was also a girl with the name of Padua. My two younger brothers also went to lower classes during this time period. I think that RPS was located near Jalan Thamrin crossing Jalan Sunda, about 1 kilometer north of Hotel Indonesia....Thanks for refreshing my memories. Would love to hear from others.

Yeah, understandably we all remember the good old days of the Regina Pacis School when it was still located at Jalan Haji Agus Salim, Jalan Thamrin vicinity. Strangely enough however, the bahasa Indonesia website of the current Regina Pacis School didNOT acknowledge the address as the beginning of the Regina Pacis School in Jakarta, instead Jalan Budi Kemuliaan was cited as the beginning era of the Regina Pacis School. Both Jalan Haji Agus Salim and Jalan Budi Kemuliaan are in the vicinity of Jalan Thamrin. Could we get more actual information of the early Regina Pacis School in Jakarta please. I am wondering why the address of Jalan Haji Agus Salim was being ignored or perhaps erased from the school history. It seems that none of the earlier founder sisters (or the sisters in charge at that time) of the Fransiscan Missionary of Mary are still alive to give correct account of this matter.

I think I started at Regina Pacis in 1st grade, 1957 and was there till I was in 9th grade, 1967. Mark Bresnan, I think I was in the same class as your sister Pat since I remember pretty well the name Patricia Bresnan. Anyways, would love to get in touch with anyone from RPS who may know me - wiepan@yahoo.com.
