Morbi (also known as Morvi) is the 2nd largest city of Rajkot district with its population being around 2,50,000. As one of the most industrially developed parts of present day Gujarat, Morbi (also known as Morvi) is popular for its ceramics, clocks, tiles and roof businesses. The city's past has been marred with a number of calamities. In 1979, thousands of people died when a dam was destroyed by heavy monsoon rains. In 2001, a severe earthquake killed hundreds of people in Morbi and destroyed many historical buildings.
Morbi has been one stop centre for the businesses in ceramic industries in India. Although the pioneering ceramic industry Parshuram Pottery is dysfunctional now, Morbi has hundreds of new factories producing millions of ceramic and sanitary wares every year. For last few years, it has also been emerging as a big exporter of ceramic products. Morbi also used to house, once the largest producer of clocks in the world, Scientific Clocks in the past(Mechanical)Ajanta Clocks (Electronic). However, it has to be admitted that Morbi lacks knowledge-based industries, which can employ skilled workers and not just labourers.
Morbi also faces severe infrastructural and social problems like most of its Indian counterparts. The population of the city has increased rapidly due to industrialisation. Authorities ridden with corruption and red tape have been extremely slow in providing good roads, well-planned residential areas, clean water and 24 hours electricity. Due to communalisation of politics, vested interests of several individuals and lack of well- educated social activists in the city, crime rate has soared in the recent years.
Morbi has one of the oldest engineering institutions, LE College, in Gujarat. Most initial buildings of the college were the property of royal family of Morbi. So, the college's buildings still have a royal outlook.
The Hanging Bridge in Morbi lends beauty to the river Macchu, which passes through the city. There are many neo-gothical buildings in Morbi.
