  • Important karstic area in the Sierra Madre Oriental (Western Mountain Range). The best-known feature there is El Infierno de La Camotera, a protected (access restricted) 75m deep pit that receives thousands of migrating bats in winter. Additional cave surveys have been made by Bat Management (http://www.batmanagement.org) and Incursiones (http://www.incursiones.com.mx) to locate, survey and register the area's caves. This is part of the Parque Nacional Cumbres de Monterrey and it's mandatory to be accompanied by a local guide AND register with the local search and rescue (Proteccion Civil Santiago) in the Villa de Santiago.
  • The Laguna de Sanchez Cave Project is a part of the Association for Mexican Cave Studies (AMCS), not batmanagement.com. A few of our early project reports are graciously hosted on that site, however. In 11 years of exploration we have documented over 80 caves in the Laguna de Sanchez area with approximately 40 of those on the La Camotera plateau. FYI, the bats are a federally protected species (even in Mexico), Leptonycteris nivalis, and are primarily there in the summer, not the winter.
