Carmichael Hall is a dorm at Tufts University. It is located uphill on the residential quad. At maximum capacity, Carmichael houses 256 students. Carmichael is a co-ed dorm, but it is single sex by wing on the first three floors. The fourth and fifth floors are all girls. Carmichael is also an all-sophomore dorm. Carmichael has two single-sex bathrooms for each floor. Each bathroom has a number of toilettes and sinks. On each floor of carmichael there are also two single-sex shower rooms. Each one of these shower rooms has four showers. On the fifth floor there is one bathroom and one shower room. Carmichael is staffed by 7 RA's and 1 RD located throughout the building. The second and third floors each have a small lounge, but the fourth and fifth floors have no lounge, as they are smaller. The main lounge is located on the first floor. A large perk of living Carmichael is that Carmichael dining hall is located in the basement.
Carmichael offers primarily singles and doubles, but also has five triples. There are 97 singles, the majority of which are located on the first floor, which is almost all singles. The average Carmichael single is 9.5'X12.5'. The doubles in carmichael are 12.5'X16.5' on average and number 72 in total. Finally there are 5 triples. The triples are 320 square feet on average, with additional closet space. They vary in dimensions though. It should be mentioned that all five triples in Carmichael are reserved for girls. All of the rooms in Carmichael have completely movable furniture. Some rooms do not have built in closets and have wardrobes instead. The rooms all have linoleum floors and white plaster walls. Certain rooms in Carmichael come with certain perks that bear mentioning. Most notably is room 505. In room 505 there is a hatch on the ceiling that can be pried open easily with a screw driver. This hatch leads to the gazebo located on the roof of Carmichael. Second, many rooms on the second floor have windows that look out unto a lower roof. One can climb out of the window of one of these rooms and relax on this roof. On the first floor of Carmichael is a very large lounge with a TV, a study room, one communal kitchen, and a large laundry room in the basement.
Carmichael, as mentioned, houses exclusively sophomores. It is considered a pretty average place to live as a sophomore- not too exciting but also not dreadful. While Tufts does not list what lottery number is usually needed to secure a room in Carmichael, an average between roommates of around 2,200 is usually enough to secure a double. Singles require higher numbers, in the range of 2,700, give or take. Triples will also necessitate higher numbers- an average similar to what is needed for a single. These are, of course, approximations.
In sum, Carmichael is a solid place to live as a sophomore. It has a very good location and the location of Carmichael dining hall in the building is also a huge perk. The rooms are generally nice and fairly spacious. It is not a particularly social dorm. Since RA's are located throughout the dorm and the rooms are not particularly conducive to social gathering, it hinders the ability of Carmichael residences to really serve as social spaces. Furthermore, there is relatively little community due to the seemingly endless labyrinth of hallways.
