Abbazia San Rabano

Italy / Toscana / Grosseto /
ruins, monastery, Order of Saint Benedict

13th century abbey. Part of the Parco Naturale della Maremma.
San Rabano Abbey rises high on the Uccellina Mountains, next to the medieval tower of Uccellina, one of the nine that make up an observation and defense system in this area of Maremma.
Built by the Benedictine Monks in the Middle Ages, in the 13th century, to the Order of the Nights of Jerusalem who then definitively abandoned the complex in the 16th century.
Today its powerful and attractive ruins remain: the mighty bell tower, the defense tower, and the apse of the basilica are almost intact. The rest of the monastic complex is, however, still legible.
