Little Mountain (formerly Ruff's Mountain) is the highest point in the center of the state of South Carolina. It stands 248 m (813 feet) above sea level, and rises abruptly about (100 m) 300 feet from the surrounding area.
The top ridge of the mountain is composed of quartz and has prevented the erosion of the mountain. Talc is found in large quatities, such that the mountain was once referred to as "Mount Talco". Crystals of iron pyrite and iron cyanite can be found scattered among the quartz. It is possible that Native Americans quarried the mountain for talc or crystals.
In 1844, an iron meteorite massing about 53 kilograms was found on the mountain. It seems to have fallen to earth in February 1841, if "earwitness" accounts from the time are true.
