This is the site of the ceremonial center of the once great Purhepecha empire. At this site you will see unique round pyramids. The site has been partially restored, and there is a good museum and signs in English, Spanish and Purhepecha explaining the various buildings at the site.
The Purhepecha were the only Central Mexican group to successfully resist Aztec conquest. They had more advanced metallurgy than the Aztec, and never lost in battle to them.
The temples were destroyed by the Spanish when they arrived starting in 1523, and the precisely cut stones that formed the facade of the temples were carried off and used in the construction of the Catholic churches and Franciscan monastery.
