office building, 1898_construction, Beaux-Arts (architecture)
238-foot, 18-story Beaux-Arts office building completed in 1898. Designed by Clinton & Russell, this narrow building spans through the block to New Street. The Broadway elevation is tripartite, organized as a base, shaft and capital. The ground floor was altered in the 1920s to an Art-Deco style, with black stone and silver metal highlights framing the three bays. The entrance is at the northern bay, with storefront in the other two.
Above a cornice is a 2-story section defined by 2-story tall piers supporting a plain architrave. The windows are recessed behind the piers and set within black metal frames. The 4th floor's bays are defined by short piers each adorned with a sculpted caduceus, a symbol of commerce. Narrow pilasters divide each bay into three windows. This floor is capped by a dentiled cornice.
The floors above are clad in buff-colored brick, divided by dentiled cornices above the 7th, 11th and 15th floors. The brick piers are rusticated, with each bay having a pair of windows separated by a narrower brick pier. The 15th floor, whose six single windows are separated by short piers with sculpted stone ornament, serves as a transition to the building's capital, the top two stories of which are set back at either side, leaving the middle bay acting as a central tower.
The New Street elevation is also tall and narrow, three bays wide. The first two floors have been completely refaced, with the 3rd floor serving as a transition. The brick-faced shaft rises in three sections of four stories each, the bays separated by brick piers, and with a similar tower effect at the top floors. The ground floor is occupied by Sushi by Bento Nouveau and Stir Cafe.
has a stone-faced base with Renaissance-inspired ornamental details. The shaft is faced in brick.
