Domhofsplatz (Ladenburg)

Germany / Baden-Wurttemberg / Ladenburg / Domhofplatz
 square, marketplace

Until the 12th Century the Domhofsplatz served as a marketplace. It was named after the bishop's administrative building, which stood on the site of the present Town Hall.

The popular name "Gockelsmarkt" recalls the old Gockelsmarkt in Mannheim on the Kapuzinerplanken where pine and fir cones, nicknamed as "roosters" (German "Gockel"), were sold with which one could make good fire in the ovens. <br />

But since such a market in Ladenburg did not exist, the presumption lies close that they regard the Mannheim market. The name ironically was adapted, because a well-known resident of the Domhofplatzoften crossed this marke with an arrogant walk what inspired the little rascals of Ladenburg to give him the nickname "rooster".

At the site of the former Domhof is the front part of the town hall today. The Domhof was originally a residence of the local nobility. Since 1423/24 it was owned by the bishops of Worms. It burned down completely on Easter 1963.
