One of 160 examples of the R5C Commando aircraft built by Curtiss-Wright's Buffalo, NY Plant for service with the US Marine Corps, Bureau Number 39611 was accepted for duty in November 1944 entered squadron service with Marine Air Group 35 (MAG-35). Later serving with Marine Transport Squadron 253 (VMR-253) through the fall of 1946, the aircraft was removed from active service as part of the postwar drawdown of forces and was mothballed in 1948.

Later sold for commercial service and carrying the registration number N611Z, the aircraft was donated to the National Naval Aviation Museum and is presently displayed wearing her wartime USMC colors.
