Delivered to the US Air Force's Strategic Air Command in September 1959, S/N 58-0185 was assigned to the 4135th Strategic Wing flying out of Eglin Air Force Base. Remaining with the 4135th through its entire career at Eglin, S/N 58-0185 was transferred to Barksdale Air Force Base in 1965 to replace 2nd BW aircraft deploying to Southeast Asia as part of operation Arc Light. Remaining with the 2nd Bomb Wing for the duration of its career, "El Lobo II" took part in what was at the time the longest combat mission in the history of military aviation when it and six other B-52's flew a 35-hour mission from Barksdale to Iraq to conduct cruise missile strikes. Continuing flights in support of the First Gulf War through the cessation of hostilities, El Lobo II was retired from frontline service with its final flight to Eglin Air Force Base in July 1991 and was subsequently placed on public display in August of 1991.
