Evergreen Lands

USA / New York / Staatsburg /
house, place with historical importance, estate (manor / mansion land)

Originally intended as the carriage house of a much larger estate (which was never built) it was purchased by Laura Franklin Delano from Tracy Dows in 1947.

Laura Delano was the eccentric cousin of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. She was known for her peculiar tastes, abundant display of jewelry and her massive widow's peak. She was frequently a guest at the White House and accompanied him on several of his trips. She was one of four women to be with him when he died.

Miss Delano commissioned architect John Russell Pope to renovate the English Tudor -style 2,500 square foot carriage house into a residence for her. Her new home would encompass a living room, dining room, garden room, kitchen and three staff bedrooms on the first floor. On the second was two guest bedrooms and her mast suite.

Laura divided her time between the estate ~ which she had named 'Evergreen Lands' ~ and her apartment at Sutton Place. She was well-known for growing citrus trees in her garden room off the living room, which she made punch from. When she died in 1976, the estate was sold and subdivided. Her 2,500 square ft. residence is now home to a biographer of Miss Delano.
