This museum is located between Red Square and Manege Square in Moscow and is popularly known as “The State Historical Museum of Russia” ( Государственный Исторический музей) is a museum of Russian history. It houses a wide range from relics of the prehistoric tribes to the modern Russia, through marvelous artworks that were the property of the members of the Romanov dynasty. There are more than a million objects in this museum.
Ivan Zabelin, Aleksey Uvarov and several other Slavophiles who had great interest in promotion of Russian history and national self-awareness constructed this museum in 1872. Sergey Solovyov, Vasily Klyuchevsky, Uvarov and other leading historians were the board of trustees and they presided over construction of the museum building. At last this project was awarded to Vladimir Osipovich Shervud.
The present structure was built between 1875 and 1881, but was officially inaugurated in 1894 by Tsar Alexander III. The Russian Revival style sculptures are clearly decorated in its interiors. After some years these were plastered over and were again restored between 1986 and 1997.
Notable items include a longboat excavated from the banks of the Volga River, gold artifacts of the Scythians, birch-bark scrolls of Novgorod, manuscripts going back to the 6th century, Russian folk ceramics, and wooden objects.
The manuscripts of the Chludov Psalter (860s), Svyatoslav's Miscellanies (1073), Mstislav Gospel (1117), Yuriev Gospel (1119), and Halych Gospel (1144) are the greatest collections in this museum. The museum's coin collection alone includes more than 1.7 million coins, making it the largest in Russia. With a collection of 4,373,757 articles, as per the counting in 1996 this is the largest in Russia.
