The Science Support Center (SSC, Building 004) provides mechanical equipment support for science field parties and for science groups working in or near McMurdo Station. The SSC issues and maintains snowmobiles, small generators, portable fuel-burning heat sources, and other portable gas- and diesel-engine or electrically-powered equipment. The facility includes shop areas and a parts inventory for maintenance of this equipment. The SSC also serves as an issue point for light trucks and tracked vehicles used by science field parties and scientists working in McMurdo Station. These vehicles are maintained and repaired at the Vehicle Maintenance Facility (VMF, Building 143). Another occupant of the SSC building is the Field Safety Training Program or FSTP (or more informally, "Happy Camper School").
